TKR is Baby Otter’s proprietary swimming system that Sunrise parents and swim instructors have been using to reduce drowning accidents for more than four decades. This unique program helps swimmers to establish the basics of water safety and swimming over the course of five consecutive lessons. It’s appropriate for children as soon as they can crawl. TKR is an essential option for any parent who has ever wondered what would happen if their child fell into the water. TKR offers the best possible introduction to Sunrise swimming classes! Its unique five-day span is intentional because it allows children to gradually become confident in the water during a condensed period of skill-building time.

Turn, Kick, Reach® Review

Intended to be taken after completing the TKR course, our TKR Review option is designed to help budding swimmers build on their newly established skills. The class is essential for strengthening and refining skills to become a stronger swimmer.

Beginning Strokes, Level 1

This semi-beginner class is ideal for swimmers who have had some experience in the water. However, they may not feel confident in their abilities to log roll, float, dive, or use their arms to move in the water. All of these skills are covered in detail in our Beginning Strokes, Level 1 class.

Beginning Strokes, Level 2

After building skills and confidence in Level 1, swimmers can move up to this class to learn how to properly execute the breast stroke in the water. This class also instructs swimmers on using rhythmic breathing for freestyle. Swimmers will emerge from this class with refined skills that allow them to enjoy proper form and endurance in the water.

Beginning Strokes, Level 3

In this class, swimmers are able to use the skills they’ve learned in Level 2 to move forward into the side stroke, elementary backstroke, and backstroke. They will also learn how to tread water effectively. Finally, survival techniques will be taught.

Private Adult Swim Lessons

As part of our commitment to fostering water safety at every age, Baby Otter Swim School is pleased to offer private classes designed specifically for the needs of adult swimmers. Many adults who enroll in this class never learned to swim. Others simply want to polish their skills after a long hiatus from the water. We believe that it’s never too late to learn how to swim properly. In fact, we encourage all parents and grandparents who anticipate spending time in and near the water with little ones to complete this course

At Baby Otter Swim School, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, safety, and confidence that comes with learning to swim. Our Special Needs Swimming Lessons Program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of children with physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional challenges, ensuring they feel comfortable, empowered, and celebrated in the water.

Meet Our Co-founders - Marlene Bloom & Mindy York

Mindy York and Marlene Bloom co-founded Baby Otter Swim School with a shared passion for water safety rooted in personal experiences. Mindy’s involvement began after her 17-month-old child nearly drowned. Knowing CPR, she was able to save her child, an event that inspired her life-long mission to prevent similar tragedies. Combining her background in business development with her commitment to drowning prevention, Mindy partnered with Marlene to establish Baby Otter.

Marlene, with degrees in Physical Education and Administration, created the school’s innovative methods after realizing the lack of options for teaching water survival to children under three. Motivated by her fearless two-year-old daughter, she developed the Turn, Kick, Reach® Swimming method. This five-day program, now recognized as The World’s Fastest Learn-To-Swim Program, has saved countless lives over its 43-year history.

Together, Mindy and Marlene have built Baby Otter Swim School into a leader in swim education, empowering families in Sunrise, FL with life-saving water skills and fostering confidence in children.

FAQs?

How much do swim lessons cost on average?

The average cost of swim lessons can range from $20 to $60 per session. Prices vary depending on factors like location, instructor experience, and whether the lessons are private or group-based. Many swim schools offer discounted packages for multiple sessions, and prices tend to be higher for private lessons compared to group classes.

What age is best to start swimming lessons?

Experts recommend starting swimming lessons as early as 6 months old. At this age, lessons focus on water acclimation and safety. For children to build essential swimming skills, starting around 3 to 4 years old is ideal, as they can better grasp coordination and follow instructions. However, it’s never too late to start learning to swim.

How many swimming lessons does a beginner need?

A beginner typically needs around 8 to 12 lessons to learn basic swimming skills such as floating, kicking, and basic strokes. Progress depends on factors like age, confidence, and consistency. For individuals aiming to become proficient swimmers, additional practice and lessons may be necessary.

Is it too late to learn swimming at 40?

Absolutely not! Learning to swim at 40 or any age is entirely possible and highly beneficial. Adult swimming lessons focus on building confidence, water safety, and basic techniques. Many adults find learning to swim empowering and a great way to stay active.

Are 30-minute swimming lessons enough?

For most beginners, 30-minute lessons are sufficient. Shorter sessions help maintain focus and prevent fatigue, especially for young children. Advanced learners or adults working on endurance might benefit from 45 to 60-minute sessions, depending on their goals.

How far should a 7-year-old be able to swim?

By age 7, a child who has taken regular swimming lessons should be able to swim at least 25 yards (the length of a standard pool) using basic strokes like freestyle or backstroke. Proficiency levels vary based on the frequency of lessons and practice.

What type of swimming is best for beginners?

For beginners, freestyle is often the easiest and most practical swimming stroke to learn. It’s straightforward, efficient, and builds confidence in the water. Additionally, backstroke is another beginner-friendly option since it allows for easy breathing.

What body types are best for swimming?

While any body type can excel in swimming with practice, certain physical traits like broad shoulders, long arms, and a streamlined torso can be advantageous. However, technique, endurance, and mental focus play a much more significant role in swimming success than body type.

Which swimming style is hardest to learn?

The butterfly stroke is widely regarded as the hardest swimming style to learn. It requires precise timing, strength, and technique to execute the simultaneous arm and leg movements. Beginners are typically introduced to freestyle or breaststroke before attempting butterfly.
