In a bid to foster water safety awareness and highlight the importance of swimming skills among children with special needs, Baby Otter Swim School and Westgate Resorts have joined forces to organize the “Splash for the Spectrum” event. The event, spanning from April 29 to May 3, 2024, is set to take place at the scenic Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa in Orlando, Florida.

Drowning remains a significant concern, especially for children aged one to four in Florida, with those on the autism spectrum facing heightened risks. Recognizing this critical issue, Baby Otter Swim School and Westgate Resorts have taken proactive steps to provide water safety education tailored to children with special needs.

Utilizing Baby Otter Swim School’s renowned Turn, Kick, Reach (TKR) program, children on the autism spectrum will engage in immersive swimming sessions throughout the week-long event. This program, developed over four decades and proven effective in Florida, equips participants with essential water safety skills, empowering them to navigate aquatic environments confidently.

“Mindy York, president of Baby Otter Swim School, emphasized the significance of education in preventing drownings, stating, “We’ve taught survival swimming at Westgate Resorts for years. Education is crucial for preventing drownings.”

Mark Waltrip, Chief Operating Officer of Westgate Resorts, expressed pride in the partnership, affirming, “We’re proud to partner with Baby Otter Swim School to promote water safety for children with special needs. Our joint efforts aim to create a safer, more inclusive world.”

The “Splash for the Spectrum” event aims to accommodate 12-14 children throughout its duration at Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa. To support these endeavors, Baby Otter Swim School encourages donations to the Baby Otter Scholarship and Education Fund. This fund extends support to special needs, underprivileged, and foster care children, ensuring access to essential swim safety education.

In addition to its commitment to water safety, Baby Otter Swim School also champions the Baby Otter Scholarship and Education Fund. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing educational opportunities and financial assistance to deserving students, focusing on swim lessons and entrepreneurship.

Westgate Resorts, recognized as one of the largest resort developers in the United States, is committed to creating memorable experiences for guests across its 22 themed destination resorts nationwide.
